RESUMO

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 and the policies to contain it have been a social problem and public health emer-gency for people in Italy in 2020. The aim of the study is assessing the prevalence of depression symptoms among nursing students from the University of Palermo during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study employed a cross-sectional study design. On April 2020, a survey was performed including all the nursing students of the University of Palermo. The survey was structured into two parts. The first part consisted in the collection of socio-demographic information, the second in the administration of the QIDS-SR16 questionnaire. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to elaborate the results and adjusted Odds Ratios are presented. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 525 students (70.3% female). The probability to have a moderate/severe/very severe depressive symptomatology is significantly associated with the following variables: "Female gender" (aOR 1.96), "Low perceived economic status" (aOR 2.32), "Low perceived health status" (aOR 2.30) and "To be a smoker" (aOR 2.24). CONCLUSIONS: The global pandemic and the efforts to contain it represent a unique event and offer the oppor-tunity to advance our understanding of how to provide mental health care focused on online psychoeducation and psychotherapy programs for young students.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Gambling disorder is recognized as a psychiatric disorder. It is shown that the prevalence of pathological gambling is on the rise among university students, especially involving students attending the nursing degree course. The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of gambling's problem and to analyze the associated factors in the population of nursing students at the University of Palermo. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It's a cross-sectional study. In April 2019, a self-administered, anonymous and voluntary questionnaire was provided to students who attend daily lessons of the 3-years nursing degree course of University of Palermo, after they gave informed consent. The questionnaire investigates on socio-demographic information, year of study, the perception of the economic and health status, alcohol use disorders and gambling problems. RESULTS: The average age of the sample is 22.0 years (standard deviation ±4.3), 67.6% of the interviewees are women. The analysis shows that the risk to be "Player at risk/Moderate gambling problems/Serious game problems" is significantly associated with the following independent variables: male gender (aOR 5.15); "Do you live with your family? No" (aOR 2.98); "perceived health status: low" (aOR 2.51); "Risky consumption of alcohol: At Risk" (aOR 3.40). CONCLUSIONS: It is important to develop an effective gambling prevention program that will reduce the risk that youths will develop gambling problems. Participation in the prevention program significantly improves youths' attitudes and knowledge regarding gambling activities.

RESUMO

AIMS: Evaluation of the knowledge and behavioral risks related to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the student population of the degree course in nursing at the University of Palermo. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An anonymous online a survey was provided to students that investigate to socio-demographic information, sexual habits and the level of knowledge of the STIs. Multivariable logistic regression was performed, considering it as a dependent variable "Do you permanently have unprotected sex (without a condom)? Yes", in order to evaluate the role of the variables of the questionnaire. Results are expressed as adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR). RESULTS: The sample size consists of 405. The average age of the sample is 21.65 years (standard deviation±3.24). The analysis shows that the risk of having permanently unprotected sex (without condom) is significantly associated with the following variables: "Are you engaged or single? Engaged" (aOR 3.24, 95% CI 1.66 - 6.33); "Sexual orientation. Homosexual or Bisexual (aOR 4.45, 95% CI 1.30 - 15.29); "Have you occasionally had unprotected sex (without a condom)? Yes" (aOR 5.09, 95% CI 2.69 - 9.62); "How would you define your knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases? Good" (aOR 2.07, 95% CI 1.05 - 4.08); "How would you define your knowledge about contraceptive methods? Good" (aOR 2.51, 95% CI 1.23 - 5.15); "Have you or have you ever had a sexually transmitted disease? Yes (aOR 4.43, 95% CI 1.71 - 11.53); "Do you know that men can also undergo HPV vaccination? Yes" (aOR 2.57, 95% CI 1.03 - 6.40); "Age. As the unit increase" (aOR 1.14, 95% CI 1.02 - 1.26). CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight the importance of involving university students in programs aimed at improving the knowledge in terms of STIs and increase of Sexual and reproductive health. Further, because STIs prevention is based mainly on human behavior, tailored intervention is needed especially because behavior change remains a complex challenge.

RESUMO

Aim. The aim of this study was to assess the success and the survival rate of dental implants placed in augmented bone after sinus lifting procedures. Material and Methods. 31 patients were mainly enrolled for a residual upper jaw crest thickness of 3 mm. CBCT scans were performed before and after the augmentation technique and at the follow-up appointments, at 3, 6, 12, 24, and up to 60 months. The follow-up examination included cumulative survival rate of implants, peri-implant marginal bone loss, and the height of sinus floor augmentation. Results. This retrospective study on 31 patients and 45 implants later inserted in a less than 3 mm crest showed excellent survival rates (99.5%), one implant was lost before loading due to an acute infection after 24 days, and two implants did not osteointegrate and were removed after 3 months. The radiological evaluation showed an average bone loss of 0.25 mm (±0.78 mm) at the first follow-up appointment (3 months) up to 0.30 mm (±1.28 mm) after 60-month follow-up. Conclusion. In this study it was reported how even in less than 3 mm thick crest a transcrestal technique can predictably be used with a long-term clinical and radiological outcome, giving patients excellent stability of the grafted material and healthy clinical results.

RESUMO

AIM: To retrospectively evaluate the prevalence of lymph nodes of the hepato-duodenal ligament in a group of patients with chronic liver disease of various aetiologies and to investigate what clinical, aetiological and laboratory data may lead to their appearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One thousand and three patients (554 men, 449 women) were studied, including 557 with chronic hepatitis and 446 with liver cirrhosis. The presence of lymph nodes near the trunk of the portal vein, hepatic artery, celiac axis, superior mesenteric vein and pancreas head was investigated using ultrasound. RESULTS: Lymph nodes were detected in 394 out of the 1003 study patients (39.3%); their number ranged from one to four, with a diameter ranging between 0.8 and 4 cm. The highest prevalence was in the subgroup of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (87.5%), followed by patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV; 42%), patients with HCV and hepatitis B virus (HBV; 41.3%), autoimmune hepatitis (40%), and HBV alone (21.2%). In the alcoholic and idiopathic subgroups prevalence was 9.5%, while in the non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and haemochromatosis subgroups it was 0%. HCV RNA was present in 97 out of 103 lymph node-positive patients and in 141 out of 168 lymph node-negative HCV-negative patients (p<0.003). Lymphadenopathy frequency increased as the liver disease worsened (chi(2) MH=74.3; p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: Despite the limitations of a retrospective study, our data indicate a high prevalence of lymphadenopathy in liver disease patients; ultrasound evidence of lymph nodes of the hepato-duodenal ligament in a given liver disease may most likely suggest a HCV or an autoimmune aetiology and a more severe histological picture.

RESUMO

The level of commitment in the analysis of clinical errors made in the emergency department (ED) is currently focused on organization and processes rather than on individual action. Four major cases of clinical errors made in the ED of a teaching hospital were investigated. Analysis suggested that the process of clinical decision making and the overreliance on the use of patterns during the cognitive process had a major role in causing the errors, rather than factors related to procedures or organization. It appears hard to design system changes and tactics to significantly reduce the probability of making errors associated with the cognitive process involved in clinical decision making. The authors have initiated a systematic analysis of errors made during the diagnostic workup in their ED, and the rate of clinically significant errors is tracked. A file is being created with the purpose to use it for teaching and orientation of all new staff.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While syncope is generally considered a frequent finding in clinical practice, no clear epidemiological evidence is available about the relevance of such an event in the general population of Italy. METHODS: The OESIL Study was designed and undertaken in 15 hospitals of the Italian region of Latium in order to assess the percentage of emergency-room visits and admissions due to syncope, as well as to analyze the in-hospital diagnostic work-up performed for this condition. RESULTS: During a two-month observation period, 781 (372 males and 409 females, mean age 55.2 (22.8 years) consecutive patients came to the emergency rooms of the 15 hospitals included in the investigation due to a syncope spell (0.9% of emergency room visits); 450/781 patients (57.6%) were subsequently hospitalized (1.3% of all admissions): 48.0% of the admissions were admitted to a general medical ward, 29.3% to an observation ward, 13.3% to a cardiology section, 1.6% to a neurology section and 7.8% to other clinical sections (neurosurgery, general surgery). The mean duration of in-hospital stay was 6.9 (5.8 days; range 1-40 days). During the hospitalization period, 93.1% of patients underwent an ECG, 51.0% an EEG, 44.3% a CT scan of the central nervous system, 40.2% an echocardiogram and 19.5% a tilt-test. The syncope spell was considered to have a cardiovascular origin in 33.8% of the cases and a non-cardiovascular in 11.6% of the cases, while the origin was unknown in 54.4% of the cases. CONCLUSIONS: Collected data support the idea that syncope represents a frequent event in the general population and is responsible for a significant percentage of emergency-room visits and hospital admissions. However, the performance of conventional diagnostic work-ups is far from being satisfactory.

RESUMO

In two studies to estimate sampling requirements for entomogenous nematodes in the field, highest persistence of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora after application occurred beneath the canopies of mature citrus trees. Nematode persistence declined with distance from the center-line of the tree row toward the row-middles. Immediately after nematode application to soil, 32 samples (15 cm deep, 2.5-cm diameter) beneath a single tree were required to derive 95% confidence intervals that were within 40% of mean nematode population density. The estimated probability of measuring the mean density within 40%, using 32 samples, declined to 88% at 2 days post-application and to 76% at 7 days. The persistence in soil of Steinernema carpocapsae, S. riobravis, and two formulations containing H. bacteriophora and their efficacy against the larvae of Diaprepes abbreviatus were compared in a grove of 4-year-old citrus trees. Within 6 days, the recovered population densities of all nematodes declined to <5% of levels on day 0. The recovery of H. bacteriophora during the first 2 weeks was lower than that of the other two species. Steinemema riobravis and both formulations of H. bacteriophora reduced recovery of D. abbreviatus by more than 90% and 50%, respectively. Steinernema carpocapsae did not affect population levels of the insect.

RESUMO

Diabetes mellitus delays wound healing. Hyperglycemia leads to osmotic diuresis and subsequent decreased oxygenation and perfusion. It also limits PMN functioning and produces malnutrition by increasing hormones that cause catabolism. With meticulous monitoring of blood glucose levels and intensive insulin therapy of the postsurgical patients with diabetes, hyperglycemia can be reduced. If hyperglycemia is contained at a level less than 200 mg/dl, attention can be focused on supportive measures to promote wound healing.

RESUMO

Surgical disinclusion and orthodontic repositioning of superior central incisor retained in the maxillary. A clinical case of inclusion of a permanent central incisor in a nine-year-old patient subjected to combined surgical/orthodontic treatment is reported, the purpose being to demonstrate and confirm the relative simplicity and indisputed advisability of conservative treatment in the case of young patients suffering from dental retention.

RESUMO

We examined cell proliferation kinetics of gastric mucosa in 28 patients affected by chronic atrophic gastritis by means of autohistoradiography of biopsies incubated with tritiated thymidine. The results have been compared with those obtained from 12 patients with normal gastric mucosa. In chronic atrophic gastritis, patients showed a proliferative pattern similar to controls. The remaining patients had an increased number of replicating cells together with an expansion of the proliferative compartment towards the surface of the mucosa. These results suggest that in chronic atrophic gastritis, as far as cell proliferation is concerned, two subgroups of patients with two different levels of risk of developing gastric cancer exist. The first one, showing an expansion of the proliferating area, probably is at higher risk. As a matter of fact, such an abnormality expresses an alteration of cell growth control similar to that observed in preneoplastic conditions of the colon and in gastric mucosa of animals treated with carcinogenic substances.

RESUMO

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to examine the variability and inheritance of esterases in five strains of the house fly, Musca domestica L. Individual zymograms exhibited 8 to 15 bands that could be assigned to one of five zones designated as A through E from anode to cathode. Correlations of P1-F1 banding patterns indicated the existence of at least 3 different loci in zone A. 2 each in zones B and C, and 4 in zone D; no clear inheritance patterns were discernable for the bands of zone E. Only the Es-5 locus of zone C was monomorphic in all of the strains studied. Eight loci possessed null alleles and codominant alleles were detected at six loci. The results suggest that esterases should prove useful for measuring relationships among fly populations or for various studies of population dynamics.

RESUMO

Zymogram analyses suggested the existence of two autosomal codominant alleles each at loci controlling the production of tetrazolium oxidase (To1) and octanol dehydrogenase (Odh1) in Texas house flies; an additional variant of the To1 locus was detected in a population from South Dakota. The allozymes of both systems may be dimeric as indicated by the presence of possible heteropolymers in flies heterozygous for To1 and Odh1 allels. Apparent nonsegregating isozymes of To and Odh (To2 and Odh2) were also noted in the zymograms of Texas flies. Some banding forms in the Odh gels could not be interpreted genetically.
